The purpose of the SOLAS Safe Pass Health and Safety Awareness Training Programme is to ensure, over the course of time, that all Construction site and Local Authority personnel, will have a basic knowledge of Health and Safety, and be able to work on site without being a risk to themselves or others who might be affected by their acts or omissions.
Lost or Damaged SOLAS Safe Pass Card ?
If you have lost or damaged your SOLAS safe pass card you can apply for a replacement on the SOLAS website by filling out an Online Replacement Application.
The SOLAS Safe Pass Programme has been developed following an initiative by the Construction Industry Training Committee. This initiative was incorporated into the Construction Safety Partnership Plan which was launched by Tom Kitt T.D., Minister for Labour, Trade and Consumer Affairs. Detailed consultation took place between FAS and Expert Working Groups representing the Social Partners with the support of the Construction Industry Training Committee. The consultation focused on the content and delivery of the Safe Pass Programme and took into account the target group to whom it will be delivered.
The Safe Pass programme requires the participant to undertake a written test and includes a number of written exercises during the day. Any literacy or innumeracy difficulties or non – English speakers must be brought to our attention prior to the course so as to ensure that they are adequately catered for. Those with difficultly understanding written and/or spoken English may be asked to undertake a course where a translator is used.

SOLAS Safe Pass
What is a Safe Pass?
Safe Pass is a one-day SOLAS health & safety awareness programme. Every general construction worker on an Irish site must hold a valid Safe Pass card.
How much is the Safe Pass course in Ireland?
WorkSafe Ireland charges €175 per person for the one-day public SOLAS Safe Pass course, including SOLAS registration, the assessment and your SOLAS-issued card. In-company courses are €1,950 for 4–16 people, plus a €32 registration fee per participant.
How long does a Safe Pass last in Ireland?
A Safe Pass card is valid for 4 years from the date of issue. You must sit the renewal course before the card expires to stay site-compliant.
How long is the Safe Pass course?
It runs for a single day — roughly 8 hours, from 8:00am registration through to a 4:00pm close, including tuition and the end-of-day assessment.
How do I get a Safe Pass?
Book a SOLAS-approved one-day course with a registered provider such as WorkSafe Ireland, attend the full day, and complete the end-of-day assessment. Your SOLAS card is then issued and posted to you. Bring a passport-size photo, photographic ID and your PPS number on the day.
Can you do the Safe Pass course online?
No. SOLAS requires Safe Pass to be delivered in person by an approved tutor. A fully online Safe Pass is not SOLAS-recognised.
What happens if I don't pass the assessment?
If you don't pass the end-of-day assessment, you can resit the course. The large majority of participants pass first time.
How do I renew my Safe Pass?
Sit the one-day SOLAS Safe Pass course again before your current card expires. WorkSafe Ireland runs scheduled renewal courses in Gorey, Co. Wexford and at our Dublin (Belgard Road) base. See Upcoming Courses for the next date.
Who pays for the Safe Pass?
There's no legal obligation on the employer to pay, but most Irish construction employers cover the cost because a valid Safe Pass is a site-access requirement.
Does Safe Pass cover Manual Handling?
No — Manual Handling is a separate certification. WorkSafe Ireland offers a discounted Safe Pass + Manual Handling bundle.

SOLAS Safe Pass FAQs
Can I complete Safe Pass online?
No. Safe Pass must be completed in person with an approved tutor. Online-only Safe Pass courses are not accepted for Irish construction site access.
How long does Safe Pass last?
A Safe Pass card is usually valid for four years. To renew it, learners attend the one-day course again before or after expiry.
What should I bring to Safe Pass?
Bring valid photo ID, your PPS number where required, and any joining-instruction documents supplied by WorkSafe before the course.
Can employers book a group Safe Pass course?
Yes. Employers can book multiple delegates and request guidance for team bookings by emailing info@worksafe.ie.
