What MEWP training is
A MEWP is any machine that lifts a person on a platform to work at height: scissor lifts, vertical mast lifts, and boom lifts (cherry pickers). MEWP training covers how the machine works, the checks you do before use, safe positioning, and how to operate and refuel or recharge it safely.
At a glance, WorkSafe Ireland's MEWP course:
- Duration: 1 day
- Group size: 2 to 4 operators
- Who it's for: operators who do not hold a certificate but have experience operating the MEWP
- Where: a suitable indoor training room plus a large, clear and closed-off yard or warehouse area for the practical work
- Assessment: written and practical examination
- Certificate: Synergy certificate of attendance provided upon successful completion
MEWP training vs IPAF: the question most people are really asking
Semrush shows "IPAF training" gets 480 searches a month in Ireland, exactly as many as "MEWP training". They are related, but they are not the same thing, and mixing them up can cost you a wasted course.
- MEWP training is the general name for any course on mobile elevating work platforms.
- IPAF (International Powered Access Federation) runs one particular MEWP scheme and issues the PAL card.
Some main contractors and sites will only accept an IPAF PAL card. Others accept any documented training from a competent provider. Before you book any MEWP course, ask your site or employer which one they need. WorkSafe Ireland's course gives a Synergy certificate of attendance. It is not an IPAF course and we will not describe it as one.
Is MEWP training a legal requirement in Ireland?
The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 cover both work equipment and work at height. In plain terms, employers must make sure work at height is planned and supervised, and that people using equipment like a MEWP have had adequate training. The regulations set the duty. They do not name a single card.
For the official wording, read the 2007 General Application Regulations on the Irish Statute Book and the Health and Safety Authority's work at height guidance.
What happens on WorkSafe's one-day MEWP course
- Introduction to the course and to the MEWP.
- Safe operating practices: hazards, pre-use checks, ground conditions and positioning.
- Elementary operation: explanation, demonstration and guided practice on the machine.
- Examination: written and practical.
By the end, participants can operate a MEWP safely to cut the risk of injury to themselves and people nearby, use safe operating techniques, refuel or recharge the MEWP safely, and position it correctly for the task.
The group is kept to 2 to 4 operators so that every operator gets real time on the controls.
What you and your employer need to have ready
- The machine: the MEWP must be mechanically sound and certified, and the training areas must be available.
- Space: a suitable indoor training room plus a large, clear and closed-off yard or warehouse area for the practical work. WorkSafe supplies the projector and screen if the room doesn't have them.
- Your PPE: safety footwear, hi-visibility clothing, safety harness and lanyard.
MEWP training cost
"How much does MEWP training cost?" is the first question Google shows for this search. WorkSafe Ireland does not publish one fixed price, because the course runs on your own machine for a group of 2 to 4 operators. There are no public MEWP dates on the calendar at the moment. Call 053 94 81445 or contact us for a quote for your group.
How to choose the right MEWP course
- Check what your site asks for. If it says "IPAF PAL card", you need an IPAF course.
- Match the machine. Train on the type of MEWP you will actually use.
- Check the practical. A course with no hands-on time on a real machine has not assessed your operation.
- Keep records. Keep a copy of your certificate for the site's safety file.

MEWP training: frequently asked questions
How much does MEWP training cost?
It depends on the provider, the machine type and whether it is run at your site. WorkSafe Ireland does not publish a single MEWP price because the course runs for small groups (2 to 4 operators) on your own machine and yard. Call 053 94 81445 or email info@worksafe.ie for a group quote.
What qualifications do you need for a MEWP?
Irish law requires employers to make sure anyone operating work equipment such as a MEWP is trained and competent for that machine. It does not name one single card. Many sites and main contractors ask specifically for an IPAF PAL card, so check what your site asks for before you book. WorkSafe's MEWP course issues a Synergy certificate of attendance provided upon successful completion. It is not an IPAF card.
How long does MEWP training take?
WorkSafe Ireland's MEWP Practical Skills course takes 1 day: classroom theory, then explanation, demonstration and guided practice on the machine, then a written and practical examination.
Who is the WorkSafe MEWP course for?
It is designed for operators who do not hold a certificate but have experience operating the MEWP. If you have never operated a MEWP at all, tell us before booking so we can advise whether this course suits you.
Is MEWP training the same as IPAF training?
No. IPAF is one organisation that runs its own MEWP training scheme and issues the PAL card. "MEWP training" is the general term for any course on mobile elevating work platforms. WorkSafe's course is MEWP practical skills training with a Synergy certificate of attendance, not an IPAF course.
What do I need to bring to MEWP training?
Participants must provide their own PPE: safety footwear, hi-visibility clothing, safety harness and lanyard. The employer provides the MEWP, and the MEWP must be mechanically sound and certified, and the training areas must be available.
Every live date for both venues is on one page. Book online, email info@worksafe.ie or call 053 94 81445.
