IOSH vs NEBOSH comes down to your role. If you manage a team and need to run it safely, IOSH Managing Safely is the usual choice — a four-day course with WorkSafe Ireland. If health and safety is, or will be, a main part of your job, the NEBOSH General Certificate is the deeper qualification. Irish law does not require either one by name.

What the NEBOSH General Certificate is (the "NEBOSH" in IOSH vs NEBOSH)
NEBOSH (the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) says more than 250,000 people hold its National General Certificate, and pitches it at managers, supervisors and anyone with health and safety management responsibilities. Under NEBOSH's published learner guide it has two parts: a unit on managing health and safety, assessed by an open-book exam, and a practical risk assessment. NEBOSH updated the qualification for 2026, with teaching of the revised syllabus from 2 February 2026 — read the NEBOSH National General Certificate page for the current details.
The "National" version is based on UK law. NEBOSH also offers an International General Certificate. If you train in Ireland, ask the provider which version they deliver and whether it suits your employer.
IOSH vs NEBOSH: what Irish law actually requires
The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 requires employers to give staff suitable information and training and to use competent people for health and safety. It does not say "IOSH" or "NEBOSH", so the IOSH vs NEBOSH choice is not a legal one. Employers, clients and job adverts choose which certificate to ask for. The Health and Safety Authority is the regulator.
IOSH vs NEBOSH: which one should you do?
- Check what's being asked for. If a job advert or tender names one, do that one.
- You manage people or a site area: IOSH Managing Safely is built for you and takes four days.
- You're becoming the safety person: NEBOSH goes deeper and takes longer.
- Still weighing up IOSH vs NEBOSH? Many people start with IOSH Managing Safely and move to NEBOSH later.
Google Trends for Ireland over the last 12 months shows "IOSH" searched roughly twice as often as "NEBOSH" — most people comparing IOSH vs NEBOSH are managers, not safety specialists.

IOSH vs NEBOSH: frequently asked questions
What is the difference between IOSH and NEBOSH?
IOSH Managing Safely is a short certificated course for line managers and supervisors — four days with WorkSafe Ireland. The NEBOSH General Certificate is a longer formal qualification with an open-book exam and a practical risk assessment, aimed at people who hold health and safety responsibility or want a safety career.
Which is better, IOSH or NEBOSH?
Neither is better in general — they do different jobs. IOSH Managing Safely suits a manager who needs to run a safe team. NEBOSH suits someone who will advise on or manage health and safety as a main part of their role. Check what your employer or a job advert actually asks for.
Is NEBOSH recognised in Ireland?
NEBOSH qualifications are widely asked for by Irish employers, but Irish law does not name NEBOSH or IOSH. The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 requires employers to provide training and to use competent people. NEBOSH offers a National (UK-law) and an International General Certificate — check which one a course covers.
What is IOSH Managing Safely equivalent to?
It is a professional-body certificate from the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, not a place on the Irish National Framework of Qualifications. It sits below specialist qualifications such as the NEBOSH General Certificate.
Can I put IOSH after my name?
Not from the Managing Safely certificate alone. Letters such as Tech IOSH or CMIOSH come from IOSH membership grades, which have their own requirements set by IOSH. The Managing Safely certificate shows you completed the course.
Does WorkSafe Ireland run NEBOSH courses?
No. WorkSafe Ireland delivers IOSH Managing Safely, at the Dublin venue on the Belgard Road, Tallaght, or on-site for groups. For NEBOSH, use the NEBOSH website to find a registered learning partner. For IOSH, call 053 94 81445 or email info@worksafe.ie.
