Fork Lift Truck Driver - Refresher

Target: This course is designed for experienced and previously certified operators where their certificate has expired/ is about to expire or who have been involved in a relevant accident or near miss or who have not driven this type of vehicle for some time. Trainees must be familiar with the steering characteristics of the lift truck and have the ability to manoeuvre both forward and in reverse in a restricted area. They should also be experienced in load handling functions. Certificates are awarded to participants at the end of the course, provided they achieve the required standard in the theoretical and practical tests. An assessment of each operator’s abilities is also provided.

Duration: 1 Day
Objectives: On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Operate a fork lift truck safely, reducing the risk of injury to operator and pedestrians;
  • Use safe operating procedures;
  • Understand the principle differences between a fork lift truck and a car or van;
  • Understand the consequences of taking certain kinds of chances;
  • Understand load stability and weight distribution;
  • Load and unload safely;
  • Refuel/recharge fork lift vehicles safely;
  • Assess and handle awkward loads.

Location

Suitably equipped training room/area, removed from normal operations. A designated area of the workplace is required for practical demonstration and practice, including racking, floor space, and a suitable fork lift truck. This area must be restricted from normal work activities during training times.

Prerequisites
  • Trainees must be previously certified for the vehicle type
  • Trainees must be experienced with the vehicle type
  • Suitable PPE must be worn
  • Vehicle must be mechanically sound and certified
  • Training areas must be sufficient and available
