CSCS Card Ireland vs Safe Pass — Which One Do You Actually Need?
Quick answer: Safe Pass is the SOLAS one-day safety awareness card contractors check for general site access. CSCS proves competence on a specific skill or machine. They are not interchangeable, and a UK CSCS card does not replace an Irish Safe Pass.

The short version
Safe Pass is your general site-access safety card. CSCS is about proving competence on specific construction skills and plant. One does not replace the other, and for most people the Safe Pass is the one blocking them from starting work this week.
What Safe Pass is
Safe Pass is the SOLAS one-day health and safety awareness programme for Irish construction sites, delivered by a registered tutor with a written assessment at the end of the day. WorkSafe Ireland's public course runs 8:00am to 4:00pm at €175.00 with the SOLAS registration card included, at Ashdown Park Hotel, Gorey, Co. Wexford (Y25 V1D6) and Uppercross Enterprises, Belgard Road, Tallaght, Dublin 24 (D24 X8CT). The card is valid for four years. Participants must be 16 years or older, a PPS number, and the ability to speak and write English.
What CSCS is
CSCS stands for the Construction Skills Certification Scheme. In Ireland it operates through SOLAS and covers specific construction skills and plant categories — the sort of card that says you are assessed as competent on a particular machine or task rather than generally safety-aware. Requirements, assessment and validity differ from one scheme category to the next, which is why the honest answer to "how much is a CSCS card" is that it depends on the category. Start at the SOLAS construction certification pages for the category you need.
Note the naming trap: there is also a CSCS scheme in the United Kingdom, and it is a different scheme with different cards. Search results mix the two constantly, which is a large part of why this question keeps appearing.

Coming from the UK with a CSCS card
A UK CSCS card does not stand in for an Irish SOLAS Safe Pass. If you are travelling over for work, budget a day for the Safe Pass course and book it before you start rather than after a foreman turns you away. Where a specific card question matters — a particular plant category, or a short contract — check with SOLAS and with the main contractor whose site you are entering, because the contractor controls access.
Which card to sort out first
- Safe Pass. One day, €175.00, card included. This is the gate.
- Manual Handling if your work involves lifting — €50.00, online theory plus a short practical assessment taken after the Safe Pass course at the same venue.
- Machine-specific training for the plant you actually operate — forklift, MEWP and so on.
- CSCS scheme registration where your role or your site requires that specific category, through SOLAS and its approved providers.

CSCS card Ireland vs Safe Pass — questions people ask Google
Is a CSCS card the same as a Safe Pass?
No. They answer different questions. Safe Pass is the SOLAS one-day health and safety awareness programme every construction worker is expected to hold. CSCS — the Construction Skills Certification Scheme — is about proving competence on specific construction skills and plant. Holding one does not replace the other.
Is a UK CSCS card valid in Ireland?
A UK CSCS card is not a substitute for a SOLAS Safe Pass card on an Irish construction site. If you are coming from the UK to work here, plan on sitting the Irish Safe Pass course. Confirm any specific card question with SOLAS or with the main contractor before you travel.
How do I get a CSCS card in Ireland?
Irish CSCS registration runs through SOLAS and the training organisations approved to deliver each scheme category. Start on the SOLAS CSCS pages for the category you need, because the requirements differ by machine and skill. WorkSafe Ireland does not issue CSCS cards.
Which card do I need first?
Safe Pass, almost always. It is the card contractors check at the gate for general site access, and it is a one-day course. Skills and plant cards come after, and only for the specific machines or tasks you carry out.
Does WorkSafe Ireland do CSCS courses?
No, and we would rather say so than take a booking under a misunderstanding. WorkSafe Ireland delivers Safe Pass, Manual Handling, First Aid Responder, Fire Warden, Fire Extinguisher Use, Ladder Safety, MEWP, forklift refresher, IOSH Managing Safely and School Caretaker safety training. If you need a CSCS scheme category we do not cover, go to SOLAS. Email info@worksafe.ie if you are unsure which one you actually need.
How much does a CSCS card cost?
That depends on the scheme category and the approved provider delivering it, so any single figure quoted here would be misleading. WorkSafe Ireland does not publish CSCS pricing because we do not deliver it. The price we can stand over is our own Safe Pass course at €175 with the SOLAS card included.
Do I need a CSCS card for a forklift or a MEWP?
Machine-specific training is what matters, and the requirement follows the machine and the site. WorkSafe Ireland runs a forklift truck driver refresher and MEWP training. Send the machine type and your site's requirement to info@worksafe.ie or call 053 94 81445 and you will get a straight answer on which of our courses applies.
How long does a Safe Pass card last compared with a skills card?
A Safe Pass card is valid for four years. Skills and plant card validity varies by scheme category and is set by the scheme, not by a training provider — check the SOLAS CSCS pages for the category you hold.
Every live date for both venues is on one page. Book online, email info@worksafe.ie or call 053 94 81445.
